Danny O'Connor

The surfing guitarist

Danny O’Connor grew up on the Northwest coast of Donegal and spent his early days surfing the waves of Rossnowlagh beach and his nights playing in the local bars around Donegal. Every year at the beginning of August, Irish Folk and Traditional music is celebrated in his hometown of Ballyshannon.

His parents ran a local B&B where many famous Irish musicians stayed over the years such as Altan, De Dannann and Dervish. He remembers distinctly listening to the music from the bedrooms where the groups were warming up for their nightly stage performances. This was a huge influence on his musical career.

Danny traveled to California in his second year of University on a student visa and here he met many fellow Irish students on tour and sang many late night sessions with them. He flew home on September 11 2001, he was in the air on an Aer Lingus flight when the planes attacked the twin towers.

He has worked and lived as a musician since he finished University in 2003. He toured with a rock band for several years before taking up a residency as a nightly singer in an Irish bar in Santa Ponsa Mallorca. It was here he learned the Irish craft of musical storytelling and spent a few nights out on the town with German singer Jürgen Drews and TV Personality Daniella Katzenberger who are residents in the town he played. After 6 long seasons he moved to Berlin in 2010 after meeting a pretty Fraulein in the bar he played in Santa Ponsa!
